Built in 1640, 20 years after the pilgrims landed, in the town of Ipswich, founded in 1633. The house, originally one-room, was the home of the town's first selectman, Thomas Hart. A tanner, Hart built the house about a quarter-mile from the center of town. The house is one of the oldest in the country.
